Outsource Records Management Responsibilities? Think Again!

The trend for organizations to outsource all kinds of traditional business support functions continues to grow. Some of the most common targets for outsourcing are services that are do not vary between industries and are widely available, like copy/print centers and invoice processing and technology services. There are also an ever-expanding variety of more specialized services available from third parties, such as:

  • Human resources and employee benefits administration
  • Payroll and tax administration
  • Security/background checks
  • Network and cloud services
  • Telecommunications
  • Software
  • Service desks
  • Facilities management

When these activities take place inside of your organization, your RIM program (hopefully) takes into account those records created by these functions. When one of these business activities is outsourced, does your organization’s responsibility for those records go away, and have you addressed the risks associated with having your business information outside of your direct control? Probably not. Have you even asked the questions?
Let’s look at a fictional example for outsourcing of employee benefits… Outsource your RIM Responsibilities?
